Background

There will be an increased pressure for implementing aquaculture technologies with low nutrient discharges.

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) provide technology for sustainable fish production in nutrient-sensitive areas, like the Baltic Sea, because of their limitied water exchange and use of biofiltration for reducing nutrient discharges.

Although recirculation technology has reached a fully commercial scale, practical solutions to the removal or retrieval of nutrients from the discharge are still missing, in particular for brackish and salt water farming like in the Baltic Sea.

Cost-efficient solutions are needed for further development of the industry and CLEANAQ will search for such innovative solutions.
